Welcome to the section of our website dedicated to Years 5 and 6.

Year 5 - Mr Lynch and Miss Smith

This half term we are reading and writing newspaper reports. As a stimulus we are using multimedia based around an alien invasion, linking with our topic work. We will also be using these clips and images to help with our narrative writing when making a suspenseful, mystery story.

In maths we are exploring decimals and their links to fractions and percentages. We will also look at direction towards the end of term. We continue to challenge ourselves as we move into mastery of these subjects as well as weekly sessions to consolidate our learning.

Our topic work is based around our science topic of Earth and Space. We will be investigating the Earth, day and night and the Moon. We will also be investigating our Solar System as a whole. In our Topic lessons we will be investigating how space has inspired people, in science, history and exploration. We will also consider artists who have taken inspiration from the stars. Including composers such as Gustav Holst and how music is used to create atmosphere and mood in films and television, such as the works of John Williams and Hans Zimmer.

Year 6 - Mrs Whittle and Mr Macbryde

Last half term, the children enjoyed investigating WW2, focusing mainly on the Diary of Anne Frank, VE Day and life on the home front.

This half term, the children will learn how living things are classified into broad groups according to common observable characteristics based on similarities and differences, including micro-organisms, plants and animals. In addition to this, we will be focusing on Denmark and using the Lego Story interactive video as a stimulus for our writing.

In maths, this half term we will be drawing 2-D shapes using given dimensions and angles. In addition to this, we will be comparing and classifying geometric shapes based on their properties and sizes whilst finding unknown angles in triangles, quadrilaterals and regular polygons.
